Basically Good condition.
45 Northern Pacific & CB&Q Wooden Notice Board - Wooden Northern Pacific & Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad depot "Notice Board". It measures 39" by 23". It was made with "bread-board" ends (strips of wood at a 90 degree angle to the main board. Once common at depots these boards were used to update the status of trains arriving (and departing) from each depot. The depot this came from had trains from both the NP and CB&Q. The NP trains were #1 and #2. I am assuming without researching it that this was the "North Coast Limited" because of the low number. The labels on the back have a penciled name of "Glenxxxx Montana". I was able to find Glendive, Montana on the NP in an old Official Guide. Glendive is close to North Dakota. The CB&Q train was #42 and #43. The CB&Q doesn't list Glendive in the same Official Guide so I am not sure if this sign was to be used at Glendive after a prior use or what the full story is. It was shipped over the Northern Pacific to Glendive at some point. This may help somebody determine what depot(s) this sign came from. I think some of the black paint was retouched or repainted at some point. The gold lettering is crisp. Some evidence of chalk where the times would be marked in by the local agent. Very Good condition.

The CGR lettering is good. It does not photograph well but in person it is very nice. Extended base cast amber globes are difficult to find. Just the Grand Trunk comes immediately to mind. The frame is not Railway marked. It clearly has the HLPiper hallmark stamped in the top. It definitely has the "E. T. Wright", Canadian look to it. This is a very nice globe with no issues. For some reason they didn't cut RR after the B&A initials. This is standard. The lettering is also standard with horizontal legs on the base of the "A". The globe was free blown meaning is was not made in a mold. The globe has applied flanges of glass on the top and bottom. These were done to have a stable platform for the plaster to hold the globe to the frame. The standard NEGCo features include: (a) dagger cut-out vents on top (b) wire bail through the top of the lid (c) 5 point rounded star in-take holes (d) standard base with recessed ring on bottom (e) unique pinch pot base. The bottom of the base is not marked. This looks more like the 1868 than the 1854 version. The 1868 was designed to take a glass fount with a tin collar. The 1854 takes a small collar of tin on recessed base of a glass fount. There are signs of use to the globe (minor scratches, etc). This lantern is in very good condition.

The Passumpsic Company was obviously affiliated with New England Telephone and Telegraph. It clearly says "Pay Station" across the top. It probably hung on a railroad depot in Northern Vermont. It was made by Baltimore Enamel & Novelty Company. The 1 3/4" lip for mounting has 5 original offset holes for mounting. One side has fewer dings than the other. It still displays very well. This feature is often found broken off or damaged. This lantern also has 12 vertical wires. They did not want watchmen to access the flame in old cotton mills. This type of lantern was used in the 1800s in New England. It has a nice 6" barrel style globe with the additional F. O. Dewey name cast into the top flange. This lantern has the original (hard to find) fount that seems to be unique to this frame. The frame was painted red at some point. This is not that uncommon on a Mill Lantern. The burner is a switch style replacement from later years. The brass top is very clean. There may be some pitting on the metal frame. Very Good condition.

It is the corporate sealer from the Attleborough Branch Railroad. This is a New Haven predecessor. A prior owner went to the trouble to have the male die made from the impression of the female die. The impression it makes is 1 3/4" in diameter. The sealer has a smooth working mechanism and it has original red and gold paint trim. Because it's basically cast iron, it's heavy. An unusual piece of hardware in very good condition.

In addition to this number board we are happy to have an original Lima Hamilton Builder's Plate from this same locomotive. Built as a 2-8-4 "Berkshire" style for the NKP in 1949. This was just about the end of steam. The NKP ordered a few sisters to this locomotive and that was the end of NKP steam. All of the plates and this number board are from the William B. Young estate. Bill stopped collecting hardware over 40 years ago. We are thrilled to have both this number board and the Builder's Plate. This number board and the plates were researched and authenticated by Ron Muldowney at his house in New Jersey.

This plate measures 16" by 9 1/4". It has raised mounting holes on the top and bottom holes (see pictures of the back). With the raised mounts It sits pretty much flat on its face. Older plates have a curve to sit flush on a locomotive boiler. This was Lima Hamilton #9375. It is clearly marked April of 1949. Built by Lima as a 2-8-4 "Berkshire" style for the NKP. This was just about the end of steam. The NKP ordered a few sisters to this locomotive and that was the end of NKP steam. All of the plates and this number board are from the William B. Young estate. Bill stopped collecting hardware over 40 years ago. We are thrilled to have both this builder's plate and the number board from this same locomotive. This number board and the plates were researched and authenticated by Ron Muldowney at his house in New Jersey. This plate was clearly sand blasted at some point. Most collectors prefer the old cruddy look of "just off to the scrap-yard". Becasue of the "clean" look, I was apprehensive about this plate but Ron Muldowney compared this plate to a sister plate in his collection and they were a dead match. It's the real deal.
97a Brasstop Bellbottom "Brady" patent Railroad lantern - Brasstop Bellbottom "Brady" patent Railroad lantern. This is an earlier Brady patent with the cast iron base. There are at least 5 different Brady style frame designs. Neither the frame or globe are marked for a specific railroad. This lantern has smaller intake holes in the bell. The top assembly and access to the globe is via two thumb springs on the upper portion of the base. This mechanism is stiff. Access to the fount is via two lower thumb springs and they have been restored without protruding buttons. The fount was electrified and it could be restored. The brass top is exceptionally clean. It has old black paint that is not hiding any damage. The globe is intact and these globes are very hard to find. Good basic condition.

The A&StL was a Grand Trunk predecessor in Maine. This was the first line from Portland to Montreal. The name was only around for 1853-1854. The lantern stands 10" tall. The A&STL initials are in a square panel that is 2 3/4" by 2". The lantern has a brass double pick wick burner. The fount was loose when this lantern came to me so I put a dab of caulk to hold the fount onto the base. This lantern shows the typical minty top area with nice japanning. The japanning on the base has weathered to a peeling black paint look. It's not paint, that's how creosote ages. This is an early lantern and guaranteed to be all original. Excellent condition with no flaws in the globe at all.

157a Brasstop Bellbottom Signal Lamp & Lantern Frame with Extended Base Globe - Brasstop Bellbottom Railroad Signal Lamp & Lantern Company Railroad Lantern. This single wire guard has the distinctive "reverse S curve" cage associated with RR Signal and its successor company Armspear. The frame is not marked for this manufacturer but all signs are that it is a Railroad Signal Product. There is an Aug 31, 1975 patent marking near the intake holes on the base. It is a single piece frame with a pinchpot and it has a very old "pick wick" brass burner. The frame and globe are not marked for a specific railroad. The globe is molded and it is more bulbous that your normal #39 extended base globe. The bail comes out of the vent area and not off of cage ears. This is another indication of an early lantern. The paint on one side is better than the other. One side might have faced more "weather". The framing is excellent with no splits or popping out anywhere. This sign was mounted on the base corners and had two additional support holes on the ends. It didn't hang from its top. This is a very nice Queens / Manhattan item from New York City.

175* Baggage Room sign from New London, CT - Wooden Baggage Room sign from New London, Connecticut. This was an interior sign. It was made of plywood and it never would have aged this well outside. It is long at 6' by 9". The lettering very nice. My consignor reports that this sign was from New London. The size of the sign and this location makes a lot of sense. It has a yellowish background that has "crackled" quite a bit. The dark lettering is a nice older style and it shows better than the pictures indicate. It has asymmetrical bolt mounting holes on both ends. It was also nailed through a few times and this is hard to see in the pictures.

202 Boston & Albany RR Red Cast Fixed Globe Lantern Steam Gauge - Boston & Albany Railroad Steam Gauge & C. T. Ham Manufacturing Red Cast Fixed Globe lantern. This lantern has a tin Steam Gauge top and a C. T. Ham base. This is not uncommon because this style of lantern was designed to accept interchangeable parts. The Red is "flashed" meaning that a thin coat of red is applied to the inside of the globe. This gives the color a muddy look. This lantern does not have vertical support wires. The lantern stands 10 1/2" high. It has the standard "Engine" base. The base does have the Ham hallmark on the support strap. The Steam Gauge top in tin is very unusual. The Steam Gauge brasstop is more common with the Steam Gauge name embossed on the vent area. There are obvious signs of original, weathered plaster on the top and bottom. The lettering style is consistent with the Boston & Maine. Note the "E" legs and compare to other B&M wooden signs. The white lettering has a thin, black border offset that really makes the lettering "pop". It has 2 centered mounting holes on the ends. If the name were WAVERLY there would be an endless array of places this could be from. My research indicates, Massachusetts (Fitchburg Division on the B&M) or Nova Scotia. Very nice eye appeal and not too long for display purposes. The back has nice old, runny crud that you would expect to see on a sign like this. Very Good condition.

The lantern stands 10 1/2" high. It has the standard "Engine" base. The base does have the C. T. Ham hallmark on the support strap. The top is a fine Brass Top with no damage. There are obvious signs of original, weathered plaster on the top and bottom. The Blue Cast initials are in a panel. The Blue color is rare and it was used by repairmen. The style with clipped corners is consistent with the Reading. It measures 65" by 12". It has beveled edges. It has one original hanging hook on one side. The other mounting hook was ripped out at some point. There is cracked wood around the missing mounting bracket. The paint looks like it was redone at some point. There is some "ghosting" of lettering around the existing lettering. The background is a light blueish green. The lettering and border are white. The reverse side has additional wooden supports on the ends. There is aging in a vertical band by the mounting bracket holes. A nice Pennsylvania sign in Good basic condition.

232 Erie RR Co. Extended Base Clear Cast Lantern Globe - This is a very unusual globe. It is clearly cast ERIE RR Co. in a "half round end" panel. This style of panel is best known for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The globe is a 5 3/8" size with an extended base. The letter casting is outstanding. The lettering is very strong. Again, please check the odd panel design. The Erie definitely had similar globes with a square panel design. I brought this globe to the Key Lock & Lantern Convention in Albany and nobody seemed to know of another. I think this is a real Erie sleeper. The consignor has been collecting since the 1960s.

282 Vermont Central RR Cut, Fixed Globe Lantern - Vermont Central Railroad Cut Fixed Globe Lantern - This is a classic New England lantern design. The frame has a flat band bail, star-diamond-star vent holes. It has a double wire wrap on the top, 6 point star intakes, standard bellbottom, pinch pot with a tin fount and a brass burner. Some people inaccurately refer to the wire wrap as a repair. It is believed that the wire wraps were a factory improvement to prevent globe detachment. One look at the tin work tells you that it's factory and not a shop repair. The globe is clearly cut VCRR in a well known style for this road. The globe shape is also standard for the Vermont Central. Both ends show old plaster in the frame. The VCRR name preceded the Central Vermont name. This means the lantern dates to pre 1873. The frame was painted at some point. It shows great tin on the base area. This is a nice lantern. The pinch pot with tin fount may be an early replacement. Very Good condition.

337a Brass "Dark" Black-Out Lantern by T. Blickman, NY - A Brass Marine "Dark" lantern. Stands 12:" tall with a 4" tall globe. This lantern has a tube that can slide up and locked in to cover the light. These were called dark/blackout lanterns during World War One. The frame is marked "T. BLICKMAN, NY". The Blickman ia a rare model "dark" lantern. The vertical wires are doubled (like some C. T. Ham models). There are odd copper wire wraps near the cage joints. I suspect that these may have used as heat sinks when soldering took place. There are no joint clips. See: www.darklanterns.com/dark.htm The tube slides up and down just fine and it can be locked into the up or rested into the down position. The brass has been polished to high shine. 367a C. T. Ham Nickel Plated Brass Conductor Lantern size #3 1/2 - C. T. Ham nickel on brass Conductor lantern. The bottom is clearly stamped "3 1/2". The frame field strips to its basic components. I think the globe is too large for the frame. The globe has a thumb joint size piece that broke off and has been taped back to keep it together. The bell has a shop stamp of what might be "56". It's not a detraction but just a mystery. If the top of the globe was ground down it would fit nicely. Good Basic condition.
368 Ware River Railroad Grand Opening Broadside 1873 - This Ware River Railroad Broadside measures 23" by 18 1/2". It advertises the opening of the line from Palmer to Winchendon. 382 MRR Adams & Westlake tall Lantern Top - This is just the top portion of an Adams & Westlake Lantern that is clearly marked "M RR". The top design and long with the lettering is a dead give-away for A&W. This is a standard size frame that wants a 5 1/2" tall globe. The base/bell is NOT included. It is missing the top spring and retaining plate. A clear unmarked extended base globe is included. It's a nice globe. The base is a little bent but it can be straightened by rolling a fat wooden dowel on the edge. There is some surface rust on the frame. / The original owner had hoped that this might be from the Monson 2 foot gauge line in Maine. I know of no examples that were manufacturer marked for the Monson line. I believe that this is either Monongahela or Montour. There are about 40 other lines with just the initial "M" in their names. About 20 could be from the 1895-1905 time frame. It's an interesting conversation piece. Fair condition.
383 3 Bound Volumes of Annual Reports - New York - Lot of 35 reports as follows: (1) Hudson River Railroad, 12 issues 1857-1869, Good condition (2) NYC & HR RR, 10 issues 1870-1879, Fair condition (3) NYC, 13 issues 1853-1865

They weight in at about 7 1/2 oz each. That means that 2 weigh almost a pound. These tags were used on canvas mail bags to transport passenger revenue information so that audits could be performed at centralized locations. All of these tags are from one collection. Basically Good condition one with old glued paper cover - could be removed
385 Boston & Maine Uniform Jacket - Silver Buttons - Boston & Maine Uniform Jacket with Silver Buttons. I think it a size 40 (based on how it does not fit me). It has no maker's or owners markings on the interior. It is Winter weight wool. It has lots of interior pockets. It has 3 exterior hip pockets. It was just professionally dry cleaned so it's really ready to be used. The buttons are silver so it is likely that it was a Trainman or possibly a Baggage or other depot employee. It is missing one small sleeve button. At least with a B&M sleeve button you won't have to break the bank to find one. Very Good condition.
386 5 Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville Timetables - 5 Timetables - Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville dating between 1935-1951
