Railroad Pennsylvania
Size 2 1/2" by 3 3/4"
Type J. L. Howard
Condition Good +

J. L. Howard Lock & T. Slaight tapered barrel Key. Lock measures 2 1/2" by 3 3/4". The Howard hallmark is on the dust cover. There is patent information on the shackle. Howard is an old Connecticut maker. The dusty cover is spring. The Key is a T. Slaight with PRR "S" on one side and "561 S U" on the reverse. I do not know what the "U" means. The bit is identical to teh popular "Knobby" later style used by teh Pennsy. Both Good or better condition.

From a collector:

I have three J. L. Howard keys here that have the same cut as this one and this is what later became the standard knobby cut for the Pennsylvania RR. One of my keys looks just like yours but is numbered 590 with letter U in the same size and position on the back of the key as yours. Another is number A244. The third is marked PENN RR and again is letter U. These keys were gotten in this area, not New England. These keys will open the S & M locks for the PRR, of which you list one for this sale. I have another Howard key of a different cut marked PENN RR, so it's long been established that Howard early-on made locks for the Pennsylvania. Your listing calls it a T. Slaight key, but the photo looks like it is marked J. L. HOWARD & CO
