30 Conductor Lantern with Green over Clear Globe 1871 patent - Aug 31, 1875 Patent Brass Conductor Lantern that has a fine Green / Clear globe. This is a taller model. It stands about 11" high. The lid is nickel plated. This was done so that the conductor could see paperwork (ticket stamping) with more reflection off of a nickel surface than just brass. Of course you had to pay for this option. The globe is a nice free blown green over clear. This was an involved process that required mating the two pieces of glass at a high temperature. The globe measures 5 1/16 in total height. The visible portion of the globe is 4 3/4". The top diameter is 2 1/8" and the base diameter is 2 5/8". The frame is a single piece with a threaded fount/burner assembly. The base is threaded and it comes off easily. The fount is also threaded onto the base "cup". Everything field strips as it should. Several lines took decades to actually exist. This is an interesting Maine item and it is dry mounted in plastic shrink wrap on a heavy cardboard backing board. There are signs of some old tape. It should be framed to show how nice it really is. Good condition.

50 Boston & Maine RR Fixed Globe Lantern with Cut B&MRR - Boston & Maine Railroad - Fixed Globe Bellbottom lantern with a clear wheel cut B&MRR globe. Made by New England Glass Company. This is the lantern on page 26 of Richard Barrett's comprehensive Lantern Encyclopedia book. The B&MRR marking on the glass is in 1 1/8" tall block lettering. The top assembly is clearly the NEGCo hashed dagger that they are well known for. There is a single wire wrap to the lid. This is not a repair. You can see how expertly the craftsman snipped the tin a perfect intervals. A shop repair would be crude compared to this tin work. There is old gunk in the lettering and it helps to really show how nice the lettering is. New owner, don't clean this. The metal bell has a minor imperfection on the edge. No biggie, it's the glass that matters. Excellent condition and an opportunity to have an example "from the book".

This 84 page book has freight tarrif info, articles and maps and loads of advertising. I think it has a list of all Agents. - Wear but no real abuse content is Good.
60 Fixed Globe Brass Conductor Lantern - Brass Fixed Globe Conductor Lantern. This is not a common style of lantern. Brass Fixed globe frames are very hard to find. Several factors make this an old frame: 1) no joint clips on the wires 2) "bicycle spoke" verticals with butt joints in the base skirt 3) hollow base 4) inability to remove/replace the globe 5) the base is secured using two button springs / There are no maker or patent markings of any kind. The brass has been polished. Included is a P&R RY cast globe that would be from the 1900 era but the frame is from the 1870 era. The separation of the vertical wires on the base allowed for pinching the Reading globe in. The globe could be replaced if a vintage globe is inserted and the base wires are re-soldered. On something this old, it's a worthy project. I tried to measure the base diameter of the globe and It was similar to 3 1/4" so something like a #39 size may be what's required. I did not have calipers up in Brookline when I did the pictures, just a tape measure so this should be double checked. The burner could also be upgraded to something older. It's a #2 size so a replacement is not difficult. Excellent condition for its age.

These china pieces typically have more wear and tear than this piece. For some reason when this platter was fired in the kiln with final glaze, they placed it on the rack improperly so the typical 3 points of rest are not in perfectly symmetrical positions. 119* Framed General Motors Pocket Calendar Sheet - uncut - The frame measures 30" by 24". The uncut calendar sheet was matted to a size of 25" by 19 1/2". It must date to the post WWII - 1950 era. There are E7s and FTs. Note that there are duplicates. There are 46 pocket calendar prints. For some reason the upper right is empty. Each locomotive has an explanation of the significance of that road and that EMD was a great idea. These small prints would have been die cut and a calendar would be applied to the back side. They would then be laminated in plastic. When each railroad would order these calendar prints you would get just one scene per year so this General Motors sheet is unusual. Ham MFG CO #1 on the base. The frame completely "field strips" to individual components. The pin that locks the fount into a specific point on the frame base is missing. This is common. It's a tiny pin and the only issue is that the fount can move in the base if the threads are not locked down extra hard. The frame shows some age and it has a couple of interesting things: the top seems elongated and tall 2) the base diameter is small 3) the globe is marked "Queen Trade Size on a paper label / The globe measures 4 7/8" total height with a 4 1/2" visible area. The top diameter is 2 1/4" and the base is 2 1/2" diameter. The top finial has been pushed in, probably from "soot knocking". It's a #1, so it is not common. Very Good condition.

142 New Haven - Aurora Dater, 22 Prov St Boston Dater Die - New Haven Dater Die from 22 Providence Street, Boston - One picture is a digital manipulation. Excellent condition.
160 Pennsylvania Railroad Fixed Globe Lamp, Fancy PRR lettering - Fixed Globe interior Lamp with cut and acid etched inscription for the Pennsylvania Railroad. This is a remarkable lamp. The Globe is plastered into place, hence the name "fixed globe" and it measures 6" of visible area. There are extensions off of the top and bottom so that the plaster can hold the globe into the brass frame. There is a fancy wreath and the center has PRR in intertwined letters. There are NO detractions in the glass globe at all. / The frame is all brass. It stands 25" tall in total height. The base can be removed by a three point bayonet mount that has a simple spring catch. There is evidence of old tarnished brass on the interior near the plaster. This is what you want to see in something this old that has been cleaned and helps to authenticate the lamp. The base has a two point bayonet mount sprung assembly that looks like it takes a candle or candle like device. There are no markings from a manufacturer or patent. The one thing I could find is that the larger mounting plate has what looks like "1357" shop stamped on the reverse. The top ball finial is threaded. During the preview - DO NOT play with this. The risk of globe damage by the internal threaded nut or using a broom stick to hold the nut in place to screw it back on is too risky. This is a special lamp and before leaving an absentee bid, please check to see if delivery or pickup can be arranged. I want to make sure it gets to its new home safely and shipping something this fragile in this size is not something I want to do.

They have 6 hole mounts and are made of light sheet metal. The paint is an archeologists dream. One has baby blue on the interior. They both show box car or darker red over yellow. Not sure what road these would be from but would look good on a VW Beetle's fenders. I think the mounting sheet metal is flexible. The paint is peeling and the gaskets are crumbling. Good condition.

This is a large model (#39) and it has a removable bell. The #39 takes a standard globe size but each manufacturer could design the frames any way they wanted. This was an early first step toward standardizing by manufacturers. The globe is a nice free blown Green over Clear with a presentation wreath and the name "S E CRONK" in nice old English lettering. The globe measures 5 1/2" total height with 5" of display area. The top and bottom diameters are standard for a #39: 2 1/2" and 3 1/4". There is a minor flake off the top of the globe. The globe is heavy and nice. The frame has been polished to a high shine. The bell is not square. The frame lists to one side. Because the bell is completely removable this could be straightened. This is not simple but it is possible. Because the frame and globe are so nice. it is a worthy project. The intake and vent holes are fancy and not just holes punched in a simple pattern. The base is clearly stamped "C. T. HAM MFG Co" - #39. Very Good condition because of the leaning bell otherwise Excellent.

290 Older Brass Porter Conductor Lantern - William Porter & Sons Brass Conductor Lantern. The base has an applied tag under the bell. The plate reads, "WM PORTER & SONS, NY - PAT Aug 3, 1869, June 18, 1871, Dec 12, 1882". This is an earlier frame. To do the fancy scroll work along the vent area is no small job. The fount is a small two spring pinch-pot. The frame metal is a nice dark uncleaned color. The free blown (correct) globe is 5 1/16" tall with a visible area of 4 1/2". The extended base is substantial. The glass is very heavy. The globe top diameter is 2 1/4" and the base is 3 1/4". The top is narrower that a #39. There is a flake off the base of the globe because the wick raiser will rub against the globe when seated in one specific location. It is not a shop stopper but replacing the burner with a shorter wick raiser shaft would quickly make this issue go away. Excellent condition.

302 Diesel Locomotive Cab Signal Indicator - We don’t see many of these in New England. It is technically called an ADU (Aspect Display Unit). It is made of cast metal with a glass panel insert with stencils for signal indications. This is a 4 signal model. It would have been mounted vertically. Because it is positional and not color based it is probably Pennsylvania Railroad and not New Haven. Used in passenger service the 4 signals are: Clear, Approach Medium, Approach, Restricting. Approach Medium used both a vertical and diagonal signal. The clear glass is cracked and it could be swapped out. It has a cast number of "166285B" on the inside. It measures 15" by 4" and it has the mounting hangers on the ends. I think that these were just used in passenger service because of the time required to reduce speed quickly on a freight haul wouldn't really work. Very dirty but good basic condition.
