49 Concord Manchester & Lawrence Old English style Cut Fixed Globe Lantern - This is a classic New England lantern design. Only a few roads used this fancy "Old English style lettering. The frame has a flat band bail, star-diamond-star vent holes, A double wire wrap on the top, 6 point star intakes, standard bellbottom, pinch pot with a glass fount and a brass flat pick-wick burner. Some people inaccurately refer to the wire wrap as a repair. It is believed that the wire wraps were a factory improvement to prevent globe detachment. One look at the tin work tells you that it's factory and not a shop repair. Now for the globe... It's a real beauty. It has applied flanges on both the top and bottom. These globes were free blown. Free blown globes have the wonderful swirl marks that this globe shows. They did not use molds to make this style of globe. Both ends show old plaster in the frame. The cutting style is very nice. / The Concord Manchester & Lawrence was a Concord and Boston & Maine controlled line. It was built to avoid use of the Boston & Lowell. The Manchester & Lawrence really ran to Concord. It was a financial shell game. Almost all M&L hardware is marked CM&L. The Concord and Northern were the two lines that used this Old English style of lettering. This is a beautiful lantern. The pinch pot is heavy and it does rattle a little. Still a great old piece. I used a colored rag to get better photos of the globe. Excellent condition.

It has two vertical mount holes on a 8" by 4" platform. It is unknown what Railroad this came from. This type of cast iron marker would be used on a bridge or some other location that needed a well known 100/mile location/designation. The bell has the A&W patent information on the underside. The frame is straight and square. The globe is the unusual rounded end panel PRR casting. The globe is very heavy and it has an extended base. Some time between when I traded for this lantern and today it got a crack in the top on one side. It does not look like a screaming "grower" and it almost looks like a weird angle on it killed itself. It's an odd globe design. Good condition.
80 Box Lot of Soft and Hard cover books and bulletins - A generous lot with several New England titles including Trolley editions by Cummins and Stephen Greene Press smaller editions. The Ed Lewis P&W is not all that common. Some nice material in here. Basically Good condition.

You can see the overlap of where the rings are applied. The CRR wheel cut letting is standard for the Concord. There is an imperfection in the glass (it probably touched something when hot) at 4:00 beneath the 2nd "R". It's not a big deal and it is not damage from use or abuse. The tin frame is a standard New England form: flat band bail, star-diamond-start vent holes. The intake holes are 6 point starts and it has a bellbottom as opposed to an engine base. 259 Boston Concord & Montreal Railroad Brasstop Bellbottom Lantern - Wonderful old patina on this early Brass top frame. It is clearly stamped BC&MRR on the lid. It is a single piece fromae with a two prong pinch pot. It has a glass font and an appropriate "Beacon" style burner. It is surprising to see a brass top with no "soot knocking" dents in it. It has also not been cleaned so it's a nice chocolate brown color. The globe is an early free blown model. It was not made in a mold. It has some scratches probably from somebody scratching their initials with a nail. The globe rattles a bit. There is no spring in this early model so this can happen. The BC&M did not have marked globes for their brasstop lantern frames. / The Boston Concord & Montreal existed form the 1840s until the merger with the Concord in 1889. This lantern dates to the 1870-1880 period. Clean it or leave it - it's Very Good to Excellent either way.
