Railroad Portland Saco & Portsmouth
Size standard
Condition Excellent

This Portland Saco & Portsmouth RR fixed globe lantern is the standard "block" cutting and not the tapered lettering found on New England Glass models. This style of lantern is called an "Engine" model in an 1850s catalog. It has a cup base that comes off with the fount in the cup. It has 2 bayonet mounting pins. On this lantern one pin is threaded and there is a locking nut.

The locking nut will be removed for the auction preview. It is easy to over-tighten one of these nuts. That cracks the globe!

The Japan finish on the frame has deteriorated from weather. This lantern is complete and all original. There is some pitting in the metal but no damage.

The PS&P was absorbed by the Eastern RR in the early 1870s. This later became the Eastern Division of the B&M which ironically in Maine runs on the West side of the Western Division. This lantern comes from one of the oldest collections in the country. I am thrilled to offer this lantern in this sale. Good condition.
